For my reading this week I was to read the next three chapters, and there were a lot of things I really liked. I really liked how Mr. Michie wanted to be able to related to his students so he introduced the book The House on Mango Street. This book was about a Mexican American woman who longing to move away from her home and from everything she grew up with. Mr. Michie wanted to be able to get this books message across clearly to his students so he asked 5 Mexican American girls to narrate for him. This girls loved doing this and really enjoyed the book. They enjoyed the book because they said it was very relatable to their own lives. A lot of the things the woman would talk about in the book were things that have happened in their owns lives. The 5 girls wrote a letter to the woman who wrote the book and asked if she would come to their school because that's how much they liked her book. Surprisingly the woman responded and came to the school to speak. When the 5 girls met her the woman told them that even though they want to move away and move on from where they are now, they must never forget who they are and what they came from which I think is very to true. No matter where we go in live we must always remember our routes because that's what makes us who we are. Also I really liked how Mr. Michie and another teacher Bob Fabian decided to do joint classes. In their joint class they wanted to do something that would relate to the students so they decided to talk about Mexican, American, and Mexican Americans. I thought this was very cool the way they approached this topic. They asked each student what they believe they were, some students said Mexican, some said Mexican American, non said plain American and non said neither. This was interesting to me because the kids frowned upon others who were just Mexican and knew no English but the kids who were actually Mexican American and knew English refused to call themselves Mexican American. It seemed to me that they were confused about who they were. I thought it was great that Mr. Michie and Mr. Fabian wanted the kids connect to who they are and why they are who they are. I thought it was a good way to get the kids involved in class, to learn about themselves, express themselves and also learn history about where they came from, where their ancestors came from, and some history about America as well.
